This study aims to analyze permitted deforestation by the environmental agencies in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes in Brazil. Using Prodes Amazon and Cerrado deforestation mapping data produced by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) for the period from August 2023 to July 2024, we identified the deforested areas that overlapped with deforestation permits provided by the state and federal environmental agencies. Of the 5,704 km* deforested in the Amazon, 9.2% were authorized. In the Cerrado, 48.9% of the 8,112 km* cleared in the period had a permit.
The analysis of permitted deforestation was based on a comprehensive compilation of databases containing authorizations for vegetation suppression and alternative land use. These records were obtained from the National System for Controlling the Origin of Forest Products (Si-naflor) and databases accessed through state environmental agencies. It is important to emphasize that the permits analyzed are public records, and any updates or modifications to them are the sole responsibility of the respective environmental agencies
