Mato Grosso continues as one of the Brazilian states with the highest deforestation rates in the Brazilian Amazon.
From August 2017 to July 2018, the Brazilian Institute for Space Research (INPE) identified 7,900 km² of deforested areas in the Prodes-2018-EN-Amazon-Deforestation-MT Amazon forest biome.
