The Instituto Centro de Vida (ICV) and the State Environmental Department of Mato Grosso (SEMA) have mapped and checked the legality of logging practices in the state.
A total of 456,855 hectares of forest areas used for logging purposes were mapped in the period from August 2017 to July 2019.
The logging permit checks issued by SEMA showed that 167.616 hectares (37%) were used for illegal logging activities, while 289,239 hectares (63%) were operating with the proper permits.
The methodology used is based on the Logging Activity Monitoring System (Simex) with adaptations incorporated by ICV and SEMA.
