In 2020, half of the logging in the Amazon occurred in Mato Grosso1. That means that the
area used for logging in the state was equivalent to the sum of that logged for wood in
the other six states in the Brazilian Amazon: Acre, Amazonas, Amapá, Pará, Rondônia
and Roraima.
Mato Grosso’s share of the area used for logging coincides with its share of the wood formally
produced in the Amazon. In 2018, 90% of Brazilian municipalities received some
wood product sourced from the Amazon region. In that same year, 53% of the total volume
of logwood came from Mato Grosso forests.
