Climate Whispers – Indigenous Peoples’ Engagement for LEAF

THE INITIATIVE

As a result of a partnership between ICV and FEPOIMT, and the financial support from the Environment Defense Fund (EDF), and Walmart Foundation, the “Cochichos do Clima” initiative (“Climate Whispers” in English) aims to disseminate information, engage, and strengthen the participation of Mato Grosso indigenous peoples in the discussions on climate financing mechanisms. At the heart of this initiative, the indigenous people talking to indigenous people; from producing to delivering of information, the protagonists are the indigenous peoples in the territories.

Mato Grosso’s potential for jurisdictional REDD has been demonstrated in the REM PROGRAM and, more recently, with the LEAF Coalition, which has already mobilized over $1 billion in funding to boost jurisdictional REDD programs around the world. However, to take advantage of this opportunity, Mato Grosso must advance a strategy of benefit-sharing and preparing and conducting the free, prior, and informed consultations (FPIC).

THE “COCHICHOS DO CLIMA INITIATIVE” ENGAGES INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN CLIMATE FINANCE DISCUSSIONS THROUGH:

Information: Developing a platform of information with updated, reliable, and easily accessible data on jurisdictional programs (LEAF Coalition, REM), private projects, safeguards, benefit-sharing, and FPIC.

Engagement: Mobilizing indigenous organizations, leaders, and communicators in the territories to stimulate and facilitate climate finance discussions.

Qualified participation: Preparing indigenous peoples to exercise informed participation in spaces and processes of discussion, consultation, and negotiation.

WHO WE ARE

As a mixed team of indigenous and non-indigenous experts, the “Cochichos do Clima” Initiative conducts research and produces information about climate finance and climate change impacts in the indigenous territories of Mato Grosso. We conduct workshops with language and tools suitable for the indigenous audience and engage in curatorial work for the dissemination of information on climate financing.
